Cat Diabetes
If you are a cat owner you should know that there is such a thing as cat diabetes and it too can be fatal if not properly treated in a timely manner. Just as humans do, your cat will show certain signs of diabetes, it is just important that you know what these signs and symptoms are exactly. By doing the proper research you should be able to gain the knowledge available to you in keeping your special cat healthy and happy for both the sake of the cat and the owner. Being so attached to our animals is really tough sometimes so it is important that we go above and beyond when giving them the proper care and if medical attention is needed, you should treat it as if it is a member of your family, because it is.
Symptoms of cat diabetes would be, your cat urinating more frequently and drinking much more water than normal. It is important to keep a close eye on your cats behavior is you are suspicious of them possibly having diabetes. Your cat may sometimes become lethargic, perhaps eating less than he would normally or you might notice that the cats hair does not quite look the same as before, it might be more dull and messy looking.
Do not ignore any of these symptoms, your cats life depends on it. If your cat has diabetes and goes untreated for too long the results could be devastating. What will happen is your cat will just stop being frisky, stop playing or paying attention to you, he will completely stop eating and drinking and will then begin to vomit uncontrollably which will lead to a diabetic coma, which in the end will lead to death.
Once your cat has been diagnosed with diabetes then the vet should be able to decide which type of treatments would be best suitable for him. Depending on the severity of your cats diabetes the vet will decide how many shots of insulin a day that your cat may possibly need in order to continue living a happy, healthy life. Before your cat is ever given insulin shots he must first be fed. Giving a cat an insulin shot on an empty stomach could be detrimental to it's well being. The side effects of doing so would be hypoglycemic shock, too much insulin too fast could kill your beloved kitty.
Diabetes in cats can affect any types of cats, no matter what age or which sex they are. There are no known exact causes as to why cats are becoming diabetic. Just like with humans having diabetes, the causes for feline diabetes are pretty much the same, including, obesity, genetics, pancreatic diseases or any improper medications for treatment. Whether you are a genuine animal lover or not I would think that knowing a little more about cat diabetes would be beneficial in your cats health and well being. Knowledge on this disease can make the difference between whether or not your cat will survive or not.
